Self Storage Ruislip Health and Safety Policy

Self Storage Ruislip is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all customers, visitors, contractors, and employees. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks on our premises, including storage areas, loading bays, access routes, and any associated facilities. It also outlines the responsibilities of those who use our services, including individuals, business customers, and removal company personnel.

Policy Statement

Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries, and ill health arising from activities on our premises. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate controls. We expect everyone on site to act responsibly, follow safety guidance, and report any concerns immediately to a member of our team.

This policy applies to all areas of Self Storage Ruislip, including units, corridors, lifts, stairways, loading areas, and car parks. It applies to all forms of access, whether on foot or by vehicle, and to all activities such as moving, lifting, loading, and unloading goods, including those carried out by external removal companies.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Self Storage Ruislip is responsible for putting in place and maintaining effective health and safety arrangements. This includes:

Assessing risks associated with the storage environment, including manual handling, vehicle movements, use of equipment, fire safety, and slips, trips and falls.

Ensuring that safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, alarms and emergency lighting, is installed where required and regularly inspected.

Maintaining clear and visible signage for fire exits, emergency procedures, speed limits and safe loading practices.

Ensuring that access routes, stairwells, lifts, and loading bays are kept as clear as reasonably practicable and are well lit.

Providing staff with appropriate health and safety training, including safe working practices around customers and removal company teams.

Investigating any accidents, incidents or near misses on site and taking reasonable steps to prevent recurrence.

Customer Responsibilities

All customers using Self Storage Ruislip must take reasonable care for their own health and safety and for the safety of others who may be affected by their actions. Customers must:

Follow all safety instructions, signs and guidance given by staff.

Use trolleys, lifts, and any site equipment in a safe and considerate manner.

Avoid blocking corridors, doors, fire exits, loading bays or access routes with goods or vehicles.

Pack, lift and move items in a way that reduces the risk of injury, including using suitable lifting techniques and seeking assistance where necessary.

Ensure that goods stored are safe and suitable for storage, and that they do not include prohibited or hazardous items such as flammable liquids, gas cylinders, explosives, toxic materials, or any item that may present a risk to others.

Immediately report any defects, spillages, damage or hazards to staff so that appropriate action can be taken.

Removal Company and Contractor Responsibilities

Self Storage Ruislip works with a range of removal companies and contractors who help customers move goods in and out of storage. While on our premises, all such parties must comply with this Health and Safety Policy and any site-specific rules. Removal companies and contractors must:

Carry out their own risk assessments for activities under their control, such as loading, unloading and lifting heavy items.

Use suitable and well-maintained vehicles, lifting aids and equipment.

Ensure that drivers and porters are competent, adequately trained and supervised.

Observe site speed limits, parking rules and loading bay procedures.

Take care to prevent damage to property, floors, doors, lifts and structures while moving goods.

Cooperate with site staff and immediately report any incident, near miss or unsafe situation.

Safe Use of Facilities

To promote a safe and efficient storage environment, all users of Self Storage Ruislip must observe the following general rules:

Use designated loading areas and follow any queueing or one-way systems in place.

Do not overload trolleys or stack goods in an unstable manner.

Keep hands, feet and loose clothing clear of lift doors and moving parts.

Supervise children and vulnerable persons at all times; they must not play in loading areas, car parks or corridors.

Do not use unauthorised equipment such as personal forklifts or powered pallet trucks unless expressly agreed in advance and properly supervised.

Do not smoke or use vaping devices in any internal area or near entrances, doors, or flammable materials.

Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures

Self Storage Ruislip maintains appropriate fire safety arrangements in line with relevant regulations. This includes fire detection and alarm systems, clearly marked fire exits, and emergency lighting where required. In an emergency:

On hearing a continuous fire alarm, cease operations immediately and evacuate the building by the nearest safe exit.

Do not use lifts during an evacuation unless specifically advised they are safe and designated for emergency use.

Proceed calmly to the designated assembly point as directed by staff or signage.

Do not re-enter the building until authorised by a member of staff or emergency services.

Customers and contractors must not interfere with fire safety equipment or block access to fire extinguishers, alarms, or exit routes.

Accident Reporting and First Aid

All accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses on site must be reported to Self Storage Ruislip staff as soon as possible, regardless of how minor they may appear. This allows us to maintain accurate records, arrange assistance where needed, and review any necessary safety improvements.

Basic first aid provisions are available on site. In the event of a serious injury or medical emergency, emergency services should be contacted immediately, and staff informed so they can assist and guide responders to the correct location.

Monitoring, Review and Policy Acceptance

Self Storage Ruislip regularly reviews its health and safety arrangements to ensure they remain effective, proportionate and up to date. Changes may be made to procedures in response to new regulations, guidance, incidents, or improvements in best practice for storage facilities and removal activities.

By entering and using our premises, customers, visitors, removal companies and contractors agree to comply with this Health and Safety Policy and with any reasonable instructions given by our staff. Cooperation from all parties is essential to maintaining a safe environment for everyone who accesses our storage units and associated services.
